UB Athletics

Students interested in fighting violent behavior can take self-defense classes offered by UB Athletics. Students must have a valid UB Student ID Card and Intramural Sports Permit Card to be eligible for these seminars. Students are required to observe good sportsmanship, both toward opponents and Recreation staff, while participating in Intramural sports. Misconduct can cause the University to stop a contest, declare a forfeit against one or both teams, or suspend an offending team.

These workshops are taught and certified by Rape Aggression Defense Instructors by the University at Buffalo Police Department. All are welcome to attend these workshops if they are interested in preventing sexual violence. They are open to all members and guests of the UB Community. Participants may attend any of the workshops as long as they're UB students. The seminars are open to both men and women on the subject of sexual assault. Renzo Gracie Academy

Greenpoint Branch of the Renzo Gracie Academy hosted a Women's Self-Defense Seminar for the Community on March 19. Arthan Bender, an instructor from the Academy, was the guest instructor. After several of her clients requested it, Chen and Bandeira organized it. They have been training together for three year and practice at least twice daily. In the first seminar, students learned how to defend themselves against various threats.


Master Renzo Gracie (6th degree black belt) teaches students. He was born in Brazil and moved to New York City in 1997. The academy's famous teaching style is based in a system of principles that can help prevent an attacker from attacking. Students learn to fight confidently, stay composed, and how to keep their cool under pressure. They are encouraged and supported to practice martial arts together, and to be able to manage their bodies to protect themselves.

Krav Maga Institute
